"I live in luxury and I haven't made a mortgage payment in almost two years," Don bragged. He sipped his chardonnay, leaned against the country club's bar, and shared with me the story of his real estate prowess...

"I paid $3.4 million for the house in 2006, and it was worth every penny at the time. It's 6,700 square feet with a pool and a one- acre lot. I'm on the hill overlooking the fourth fairway, and I can see all the way to [the next city] from my bedroom window," Don continued.

"Wachovia Bank loaned me $3 million, and the developer took a second for $400,000. I don't have any skin in the game – so to speak. I made my mortgage payments for a while, but when prices started to fall, it just didn't make sense anymore. I mean, why should I pay anything when I'm the only one with nothing to lose?"

If the numbers were only half as good as the reports, early investors could ride this stock to glory... but there is plenty skepticism about this discovery and the small company behind it.

That's why I recently dusted off my Jungle boots and took a 12,000 mile trip to find out the facts for myself.

"But," I asked, "hasn't the bank tried to foreclose or force a sale of the house out from under you?"

"Ha!" He crowed, and his tone emphasized the naiveté of my question. "Why would they do that? The house is worth less than $2 million right now. So if the bank forecloses, it'll have to recognize a $1 million loss. And if it writes my loan down by that much, how many other loans do you suppose it'll have to write down? It can't force a short sale [where the bank sells the house for less than the loan amount] on me either because it'll have to take care of the second note holder by offering him something just to get out of the way. So Wachovia is screwed. It's cheaper for them to let me keep living there for free. And the best thing is, I can more than afford to pay off the entire loan right now." Don let out a sinister kind of chuckle, like a man who just squashed a bug and got some warped sense of delight from doing it.

"Wow," I responded. "There used to be a time when being a deadbeat was frowned upon. But you seem to wear it as a badge of honor."

"Listen," Don turned aggressively and pointed his index finger at me. "You think I'm the only one doing this? You think I'm the only one taking advantage of the situation? I'll bet half the people in this room are doing the exact same thing." He waved his arm across the bar. "And the other half are thinking about doing it."

"Besides," Don continued, "banks have been screwing people like us for so long it's about time they got a taste of their own medicine."

His words hit me like a Louisville Slugger across the forehead.

We no longer live in a time where men are bound by honor to repay their debts. As sad as it is, people feel justified welching on their agreements.

And the banks have played a big role in this transition. They charged 29% interest on credit cards while paying 0% interest on savings. They knowingly lent money to people who could not afford to pay it back. They used taxpayer-funded bailouts to pay million-dollar bonuses to their corporate elite. And they shipped all of their service-center jobs overseas.

Let's face it: The banks most of us do business with today aren't like the Building and Loan George Bailey operated in It's a Wonderful Life. Our banks are faceless, nameless, brown bag institutions whose only concern for the customer is to make sure he pays the $10 monthly account service fee.

It is that business practice that has fostered the resentment of people like Don and made him feel justified breaking his agreement. Like it or not, agree with it or not, Don's opinion is gaining popularity.

And as that sentiment grows, it is likely to provide the weight that pulls the second shoe down onto the industry.

De pot aanvullen met koffie?!

Als de dingen in je leven
je even allemaal te veel worden,
als 24 uur in een dag niet
meer genoeg tijd lijkt,
denk dan eens aan dit
bericht...

Een professor stond voor de klas
om een les filosofie te geven.
Hij had een aantal voorwerpen
voor zich liggen.
Toen de klas begon,
nam hij zonder iets te zeggen
de lege pot van de mayonaise.

En begon deze te vullen met golfballetjes.
Toen deze hier helemaal mee gevuld was,
vroeg de professor aan zijn studenten
of de pot nu helemaal vol was.

Zij antwoordden van wel.

Toen nam de professor een doos
met kralen en kiepte deze in de pot.
Hij schudde lichtjes met de pot
en de kralen rolden tussen
de open plekken tussen de golfballetjes.
Weer vroeg de professor aan zijn studenten of de pot nu vol was.
Ze gaven weer eenzelfde antwoord:

ja, de pot is vol.

De professor nam nu een doos
met zand en kiepte dit zand in de pot
met golfballetjes en kralen.
Natuurlijk vulde het zand
alle ruimte op tussen de
golfballetjes en de kralen.
Weer vroeg de professor aan zijn
studenten of de pot nu vol was:

de studenten antwoordden van wel.

Van onder het bureau nam
de professor nu twee koppen koffie
en kiepte de hele inhoud van deze
twee koppen koffie in de pot met
golfballetjes, kralen en zand.
De hele inhoud verdween in de pot.
De koffie vulde de ruimte op
tussen het zand.
De studenten begonnen te lachen.

"Nu", zei de professor, "
nu wil ik dat jullie deze pot zien
als jullie eigen leven.
Deze pot gevuld met golfballetjes,
kralen, zand en koffie, stelt namelijk
het leven van een mens voor."

"De golfballetjes zijn
de belangrijke dingen in het leven:
je familie, je kinderen, je geloof,
je gezondheid en je favoriete bezigheden.
Dingen die ervoor zorgen dat als er niets
meer op de wereld was dan deze dingen,
je leven toch gevuld zou zijn."

"De kralen zijn de andere dingen
die belangrijk zijn.
Je werk, je huis, je auto.
Het zand, dat staat voor
de kleine dingetjes die
belangrijk voor je zijn."

"Als je het zand als eerste
in de pot kiept en hem hiermee vult,
is er geen plek meer

Dat zelfde geldt ook

Speel bijvoorbeeld met je kinderen. Neem tijd voor een onderzoek voor je
gezondheid zo nu en dan.

Neem je partner mee uit eten.
Doe nog iets leuks,

"Zorg eerst voor de golfballetjes,

Eén van de studenten
steekt een vinger op
en vraagt waar de twee
koppen koffie in die pot
dan voor zouden moeten staan.
De professor lacht en
zegt de student dat ze
daarmee een heel goede
vraag heeft gesteld.

"Ik wilde daarmee alleen
nog maar weer eens aangeven
en bevestigen, dat,
hoe vol je leven ook mag zijn,

er is altijd wel een plekje
om samen met een vriend
of een dierbare
een kopje koffie te drinken."

Having chosen English as the preferred language in the EEC, the European
Parliament has commissioned a feasibility study in ways of improving efficiency
in communications between Government departments.

European officials have often pointed out that English spelling is
unnecessarily difficult - for example, cough, plough, rough, through and
thorough. What is clearly needed is a phased programme of changes to iron out
these anomalies. The programme would, of course, be administered by a committee
staff at top level by participating nations.

In the first year, for example, the committee would suggest using 's' instead
of the soft 'c'. Sertainly, sivil servants in all sities would resieve this
news with joy. Then the hard 'c' could be replaced by 'k' sinse both letters
are pronounsed alike. Not only would this klear up konfusion in the minds of
klerikal workers, but typewriters kould be made with one less letter.

There would be growing enthusiasm when in the sekond year, it kould be
announsed that the troublesome 'ph' would henseforth be written 'f'. This would
make words like 'fotograf' twenty per sent shorter in print.

In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to
reash the stage where more komplikated shanges are possible. Governments would
enkourage the removal of double letters which have always been a deterent to
akurate speling.

"Kunst am Fluss" - zum fünften Mal erfolgreich

Dieser Sommer hat für die eine oder andere Überraschung gesorgt. Am 19. 7 hatten die Künstler auf der Mainwiese richtig viel zu tun.
Drei starke Regengüsse hatten ausreichend für Fitnessübungen gesorgt. Jedesmal mussten zwei unverbesserlich optimistischeKünstler, die bis zu Ende geblieben sind, ein- und wieder ausladen. "Es war aber sehr lustig," sagten sie lachend. Während des Regens konnte man sich bei Pizza und Brezel im Zelt gut erholen.
Und ein kleines Wunder hat auch nicht gefehlt: für die Zeit der Lesung mit Poetin Heide Kunz-Traubert hat sich das Wetter beruhigt. Die Sonne schien und der Wind hörte auf zu wehen. Die Zuhörer haben ihre spritzige Poesie sehr genossen.
Eine besondere Attraktion für Gäste war zweifellos die Live-Malaktion von Oliver Voigt, der ein Bild 'gepeitscht' hat.
Bei dieser Technik wird die Ölfarbe mit einer echten Peitsche auf den Malkarton aufgetragen.
Am Ende entstand eine Seelandschaft mit Boot. Der Tag war totz der Regenunterbrechungen sehr ereignissreich und gut gelungen.

Viel entspannter ging es am Sonntag, dem 26.7 zu. Die Sonne strahlte freundlich und nur eine leichte Brise war am Mainufer zu spüren,als die zehn Künstler ihre Staffeleien aufgestellt hatten. Die Künstler, Nina Altmann, Solveig Luisa Gross, Edina Janknegt, Christoph Klein, Birgit Leiser -Conen, Martha Lopez, Udo Schnaars,Elisabeth Schneider, Oliver Voigt und Annelie Ulrich wussten schon morgens früh, dass der Tag ihnen viele Besucher schicken wird.
Tatsächlich konnten die Veranstalter rund dreitausend Besucher an diesem Nachmittag zählen. Bei der Vielfalt der Gemälde und Kunstwerke konnte sicherlich jeder etwas nach seinem Geschmack finden.
Edina Janknegt hat Impressionen des Himmels in Öl festgehalten, Martha Lopez malte die Mainterasse und die Umgebung und Oliver Voigt nahm wieder seine Peitsche zur Hand und fertigte ein Bild in Rot-Grau. Luisa Gross erweiterte die Gips-Installation 'Die Spinne' mit einem weiteren Bein. Kinder haben das Angebot Steine zu bemalen dankend angenommen und stürzten sich auf Stein, Pinsel und Farbe. Stolz haben sie ihre Arbeiten am Ende den Eltern gezeigt und nach Hause mitgenommen.
Viele Besucher würden 'Kunst am Fluss' am liebsten jeden Sonntag am Ufer finden. Während das Ehepaar Janknegt Hanaus Oberbürgermeister Claus Kaminsky das Projekt vorstellte, stellte er fest, dass die Kunstmeile sich so schön an das Ambiente anpasse, als wäre sie schon immer da gewesen.
Auch das Stück Zweitschkuchen, das gerade frisch aus dem Ofen von 'Bernds Brothaus' kam, fand der Oberbürgermeister köstlich. Als Geschenk bekam er von Bernd Stenger noch ein frisch gebackenes Brot. Die urigen, selbst gebauten Backöfen waren ebenfalls ein Publikumsmagnet.
Leckeres Brot, Brezel und Pizza hat er ununterbrochen gebacken. Am Ende des Tages waren sowohl, die Veranstalter, als auch die Künstler satt und glücklich.
Das für alle Beteiligten ereignisreiche Event wird bald wiederholt.

„Kunst am Fluss“ kommt wieder am 26. Juli ab 12:00 Uhr

Wie bereits im Frühjahr bereichert „Kunst am Fluss“ im Juli wieder die Mainwiesen am Schloss Philippsruhe. Wegen des großen Interesses zahlreicher Besucher – auch ausserhalb der Region Hanau – findet das Projekt nun an zwei Sonntagen mit erweiterten Attraktionen statt.

Im Abstand von 10 – 15 Metern präsentieren 10 Künstler, Maler, Bildhauer und Aktionskünstler ihre Werke, die diesmal unter dem Motto „Phantasie und Emotion“ stehen. So wird Solveig Luisa Gross ihre Gips-Installation „Die Spinne“ im Laufe der Aktion erweitern.

’Live’ malen werden Edina Janknegt, Martha Lopez und Oliver Voigt.

Während der interessierte Besucher bei der Entstehung der Arbeiten zuschauen kann, sind auch Diskussionen und Anregungen erwünscht, die den gegenseitigen Austausch und das Verständnis füreinander fördern sollen. Wer durch die ausgestellten Kunstwerke oder ein angeregtes Gespräch spontan Lust verspürt, seine Kreativität auszuprobieren, ist ebenfalls herzlich eingeladen. In ungezwungener Atmosphäre wird das Miteinander von Künstlern und Betrachtern gepflegt, damit sich die Positionen annähern, auflösen oder auch umkehren.

Oberbürgermeister Claus Kaminsky möchte gerne das Projekt kennenlernen und besucht die Veranstaltung um 16.30 Uhr.

Für die Kinder, die naturgemäß leicht Zugang zu kreativer Betätigung finden, hat sich Frau Janknegt etwas Besonderes ausgedacht: Steine, aus der Renovierung alter Häuser übrig geblieben, sollen einer neuen Verwendung zugeführt werden. Die Kinder können sie bemalen (verfremden), bearbeiten (verändern) oder etwas Neues daraus bauen (recyceln).

Für kulinarische Höhepunkte sorgt Herr Stenger mit seinem mobilen Backwagen, der Brot, Brezeln und Pizza für die hungrigen Besucher und die Künstler bereithält.

Selbst wer bisher noch keinen Draht zur Kunst gefunden hat, kann sich dem Rahmenprogramm langsam annähern und wird sicherlich interessante Entdeckungen machen. Die Veranstalter und Künstler freuen sich Ihren Besuch.

Stevie Wonder and Tiger Woods are in a bar. Tiger turns to Stevie and
says, 'How's the singing career going?'

Stevie replies, 'Not too bad. How's the golf?'

Woods replies, 'Not too bad, I've had some problems with my swing, but I
think I've got that right now.'

Stevie says, 'I always find that when my swing goes wrong, I need to
stop playing for a while and not think about it. Then, the next time I
play, it seems to be all right.'

Tiger says, 'You play GOLF?'

Stevie says, 'Yes, I've been playing for years'.

Tiger says, 'But -- you're blind! How can you play golf if you can't
see?'

Stevie Wonder replies, 'Well, I get my caddy to stand in the middle of
the fairway and call to me. I listen for the sound of his voice and play
the ball towards him. Then, when I get to where the ball lands, the
caddy moves to the green or farther down the fairway and again I play
the ball towards his voice.'

'But, how do you putt?' asks Tiger

'Well', says Stevie, 'I get my caddy to lean down in front of the hole
and call to me with his head on the ground and I just play the ball
towards his voice.'

Tiger asks, 'What's your handicap?'

Stevie says, 'Well, actually -- I'm a scratch golfer.'

Woods, incredulous, says to Stevie, 'We've got to play a round
sometime.'

Stevie replies, 'Well, people don't take me seriously, so I only play
for money, and never play for less than $10,000 a hole. That a problem?'

Dass ihre Art, Dinge zu betrachten und zu hinterfragen, ankommt, zeigen zahlreiche Lesungen, die Veröffentlichung ihrer Gedichte in Zeitschriften sowie verschiedene Auszeichnungen, u. a. der Kunstpreis der Stadt Bruchköbel. Die Lesung findet um 15.00 Uhr auf der Mainwiese statt.

Für die Kinder, die naturgemäß leicht Zugang zu kreativer Betätigung finden, hat sich Frau Janknegt etwas Besonderes ausgedacht: Steine, aus der Renovierung alter Häuser übrig geblieben, sollen einer neuen Verwendung zugeführt werden. Hanau liest „Scherbenpark" von Alina Bronsky

Zum dritten Mal lädt die Stadtbibliothek Hanau zu der Aktion "Hanau liest ein Buch" ein. Vom 26. Juni bis zum 5. Juli 2009 steht der Roman "Scherbenpark" von Alina Bronsky im Mittelpunkt.
Das Buch wird am Mittwoch, 18. März 2009 um 20 Uhr im CongressPark Hanau vorgestellt. "Anlesen" heißt die Veranstaltung und das ist wörtlich zu nehmen: Oberbürgermeister Claus Kaminsky wird die ersten Sätze vorlesen und so das Startsignal zur Teilnahme am Projekt geben.

Vorleserinnen und Vorleser werden gesucht, besondere, schöne oder ungewöhnliche Vorleseorte und weitere Ideen für die Gestaltung der Aktionswoche vom 26. Juni bis zum 5. Juli 2009.
Wie bereits 2005 mit "Emmas Glück" von Claudia Schreiber und 2007 mit "Gut gegen Nordwind" von Daniel Glattauer sind alle eingeladen, ihre Lesefreude weiterzugeben und Lesen in ihrem Umfeld oder in der Stadt sichtbar zu machen.

Die Auftaktveranstaltung am 18. März bietet Gelegenheit, sich über das Projekt und das Buch zu informieren, mit Teilnehmern und Teilnehmerinnen der letzten Jahre zu sprechen, Ideen auszutauschen und sich inspirieren zu lassen.

Doris Hartmann von "Bücher bei Dausien" und Dieter Dausien vom "Buchladen am Freiheitsplatz" werden den Roman ausführlich vorstellen. CongressPark Hanau stellt 150 Exemplare von "Scherbenpark" für die Vorleserinnen und Vorleser zur Verfügung.
Bis zum 30. Mai ist Zeit, das Buch zu lesen und sich zu entscheiden, wo und wann man vorlesen möchte. Die Stadtbibliothek koordiniert die Termine, bringt Vorleserinnen und Vorleseorte zusammen und erstellt den Lesungskalender. Lesungen sind möglich im Park, an der Bushaltestelle, in Arztpraxen, bei Behörden, in Kantinen, in Literaturkreisen, Möbelhäusern, bei Vereinstreffen, in öffentlichen Einrichtungen, Cafes, Jugendhäusern, Gärten und überall wo sich Menschen versammeln. Hanau liest nicht nur ein Buch, Hanau stiftet Lesefreude.

Die interaktive Ausstellung bietet etwas für jede Generation. Die bekannten 'Kreativen Stationen' der letzten Ausstellung werden mit Neuen ergänzt.
Spielerisch werden die Besucher in die Welt der Farbe entführt. In der 'Sinnesecke' geht es um Tasten, Sehen und Fühlen.
Das Hanau Quiz mit 25 Fragen fordert jede Hanauerin und jeden Hanauer heraus. Die Gewinnerin oder der Gewinner erhält ein Gemälde.
In der Kinderecke ist immer viel los. Die Kleinen können malen und täglich mit Hilfe von Frau Martha López Collagen zusammen stellen. Während der Ausstellung gibt es einen Kindermalwettbewerb zum Thema 'Hanau, meine Stadt'. Wir möchten herausfinden, wie Kinder die Stadt erleben und wie ihre Eindrücke über das Leben in Hanau sind. Zu gewinnen ist ein kreativer Nachmittag in Galerie Janknegt.

Gemälde von Martha Lopez, Edina Janknegt und Gastaussteller Jozsef Gombor bilden den Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung. Während der Öffnungszeit wird 'live' gemalt und Collagen zusammengestellt. Die Besucher können miterleben, wie ein Kunstwerk entsteht.

Galerie Janknegt lädt Sie recht herzlich zu dem Projekt 'Kunst am Fluss' ein. Es findet nicht am Sonntag den 24 Mai statt, sondern am Sonntag, den 31. Mai 2009 ab 12.00 Uhr ( bis ca. 18.00 Uhr)

zum dritten Mal am Mainufer bei Schloss Phillippsruhe statt. (Wenn das Wetter mitspielt)

Die Idee ist folgende:

Künstler stellen Ihre Staffeleien in einer Reihe zwischen Fluss und den Weg. auf. Die Reihe wird nicht gerade, sondern wellig sein und folgt die Linie des Flusses.
Unser Motto ist diesmal 'Blüte'. Es ist aber auch möglich, spontan andere Konzepte zu verwirklichen, wenn entsprechende Bilder zur Verfügung stehen.
Das Projekt soll für die Künstler nicht zu arbeitsaufwändig sein. Jeder kann bis zu drei Bilder mit Staffeleien im Abstand von 10-15 Metern aufstellen und seinen Bereich selbst betreuen. Es soll den Künstlern die Möglichkeit gegeben werden die eigene Arbeiten zu präsentieren, um in einer entspannten Atmosphäre mit Leuten ins Gespräch zu kommen. Es ist auch möglich, dass Besucher sich spontan an der Malaktion beteiligen.

Ziel der Galerie ist es hier, dem Element Wasser durch diese künstlerische Aktion wieder zu einem wichtigeren Stellenwert zu verhelfen, ausserdem Künstlern die Gelegenheit zu geben Ihre Arbeiten zu presentieren. Die Familien sind herzlich eingeladen mitzukommen mit Decken zum Picknicken und die Atmosphäre zu geniessen.

Immer noch nicht verstanden, warum die Wirtschaftskrise über uns hereingebrochen ist? Hier der wohl ultimative Erklärungsversuch. Live aus der Hauptstadt.

Mandy besitzt eine Bar in Kreuzberg. Um den Umsatz zu steigern, beschließt sie, die Getränke der Stammkundschaft (hauptsächlich alkoholkranke
Hartz-IV-Empfänger) auf den Deckel zu nehmen, ihnen also Kredit zu gewähren.
Das spricht sich in Kreuzberg schnell herum und immer mehr Kundschaft desselben Segments drängt sich in Mandy's Bar. Da die Kunden sich um die Bezahlung keine Sorgen machen müssen, erhöht Mandy sukzessive die Preise für den Alkohol und erhöht damit auch massiv ihren Umsatz.

Der junge und dynamische Kundenberater der lokalen Bank bemerkt Mandys Erfolg und bietet ihr zur Liquiditätssicherung eine unbegrenzte Kreditlinie an. Um die Deckung macht er sich keinerlei Sorgen, er hat ja die Schulden der Trinker als Deckung. Zur Refinanzierung transformieren top ausgebildete Investmentbanker die Bierdeckel in verbriefte Schuldverschreibungen mit den Bezeichnungen SUFFBOND®, ALKBOND® und KOTZBOND®. Diese Papiere laufen unter der modernen Bezeichnung SPA Super Prima Anleihen und werden bei einer usbekischen Online-Versicherung per Email abgesichert.

Daraufhin werden sie von mehreren Rating-Agenturen (gegen lebenslanges Freibier in Mandys Bar) mit ausgezeichneten Bewertungen versehen. Niemand versteht zwar, was die Abkürzungen dieser Produkte bedeuten oder was genau diese Papiere beinhalten, aber dank steigender Kurse und hoher Renditen werden diese Konstrukte ein Renner für institutionelle Investoren. Vorstände und Investmentspezialisten der Bank erhalten Boni im dreistelligen Millionenbereich.

Eines Tages, obwohl die Kurse immer noch steigen, stellt ein Risk Manager (der inzwischen wegen seiner negativen Grundeinstellung selbstverständlich entlassen wurde) fest, dass es an der Zeit sei, die ältesten Deckel von Mandys Kunden langsam fällig zu stellen. Überraschenderweise können weder die ersten noch die nächsten Hartz-IV-Empfänger ihre Schulden, von denen viele inzwischen ein Vielfaches ihres Jahreseinkommens betragen, bezahlen.
Solange man auch nachforscht, es kommen so gut wie keine Tilgungen ins Haus.

Mandy macht Konkurs. SUFFBOND® und ALKBOND® verlieren 95%, KOTZBOND® hält sich besser und stabilisiert sich bei einem Kurswert von 20%. Die Lieferanten hatten Mandy extrem lange Zahlungsfristen gewährt und zudem selbst in die Super Prima Anleihen investiert. Der Wein- und der Schnapslieferant gehen Konkurs, der Bierlieferant wird dank massiver staatlicher Zuschüsse von einer ausländischen Investorengruppe übernommen.
Die Bank wird durch Steuergelder gerettet. Der Bankvorstand verzichtet für das abgelaufene Geschäftsjahr auf den Bonus.

April 14 (Bloomberg) -- With all due respect to Toyota, the
Prius is just plain ugly. There’s a good reason for its bulbous
shape, which cuts air drag and improves efficiency. Honda’s
hybrid, the Insight, looks remarkably similar.
Aerodynamics aside, part of that inbuilt dorkiness is
calculated -- an honor badge proclaiming that the car is a
hybrid and, by extension, the driver a do-gooder. Hark the new
world order: Nerds shall rule.
It makes me yearn for the time when your car wasn’t quite
so political.
So I quite like the reversal presented by a sedan that
makes 40 miles per gallon and is neither Japanese nor a hybrid.
There’s something wonderfully throwback about Volkswagen’s Jetta
TDI, which runs on diesel and looks like any other boring Jetta.
It isn’t sexy, but it’s not trying to make a statement either.
Though diesels don’t get nearly as much media ink as
hybrids, they’ve come a long way from their former status as
polluting clatter-traps. They now score up to 30 percent better
fuel economy and produce some 25 percent less emissions than
regular gasoline engines.
These results are due to ultra-low sulfur diesel, direct-
injected engines and exhaust systems that collect and filter
particulates. The Jetta TDI meets emissions requirements in all
50 states (hello, California!).

Expensive Fuel

While Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have diesels available in
the U.S., one argument against the fuel is that it’s more
expensive than gasoline. Ultra-low-sulfur averaged $2.25 a
gallon at the end of March, versus $2.04 for regular, according
to the Energy Information Administration.
Still, while leases on full-size SUVs may seem unbeatable
right now, $2-a-gallon petrol won’t last forever. If you’re
shopping for a high-mileage machine and can’t decide if a hybrid
or diesel is a better bet, look to your own driving habits and
the range of your daily commute.
Hybrids do best in stop-and-go traffic where they operate
in all-electric mode for short distances, usually less than a
mile. In that situation the engine frequently stays off, using
little or no gas. Diesels operate less efficiently in traffic
yet excel on the highway.
“A hybrid is best in urban areas like New York or Tokyo,
while a diesel is better for long distances because it gets its
best mileage at higher speeds,” said John Voelcker, editor-in-
chief of GreenCarReports.com. “If your commute is on freeways,
consider a diesel.”

Open Roads

The Environmental Protection Agency’s estimate for the
Jetta TDI is 29 miles per gallon in the city, 40 on the highway.
Over days of motoring on open roads, I consistently clocked in
at 42 mpg, numbers in line with an independent testing agency VW
hired that claimed 38 mpg in city driving and 44 mpg on the
highway. (The new, third-generation Prius gets 50 mpg combined
city and highway.)
Two drivers in a Jetta TDI even broke the Guinness World
Record for the lowest consumption across the 48 states,
averaging 58.82 mpg over almost 9,500 miles.
The Jetta TDI easily bests the gasoline model, which gets
mpg figures of 21 city/30 highway. The starting price for the
TDI is $22,270, slotting just under the top-of-the-line $22,965
SEL model. (Buyers also qualify for a $1,300 federal tax
credit.)
Also available in “SportWagen” form, the TDI models get a
2.0-liter direct-injected and turbocharged four-cylinder engine
with 140 horsepower. That’s considerably less than the 170
horses found in the standard five-cylinder petrol engine. Yet as
soon as you step on the gas you’ll find a wallop of diesel-
powered torque -- 236 pound feet versus 177.

Extra Torque

That extra torque is readily apparent and very appreciated
off the line, dusting bigger-engined cars at the stoplight. The
relative lack of horsepower is mostly noticeable when already at
freeway speeds and you want to pass another fast-moving vehicle.
There’s a pause as the engine roots around for the extra power.
My test car had VW’s excellent six-speed DSG double-clutch
automatic transmission (a $1,100 option), though for some reason
it isn’t available with behind-the-wheel paddles.
Scooting the front-wheel-drive sedan around snow-covered
roads was both entertaining and involving, though it lacks the
steering precision of a big-brother Audi or the on-road feel of
a BMW. I took the TDI out on one of the coldest days of the
year, and even in sub-zero temperatures, it started right up. It
was relatively quiet, too.
In fact, the only reason onlookers might have recognized it
as a diesel was because of the unfortunate “TDI Clean Diesel”
logo emblazoned in massive letters on the sides -- a feature I
assume is not an actual option for consumers.
The silver accents on the front grill are likable, but
otherwise styling inside and out is best described as benign. In
fact I’d only call the Jetta handsome when compared with a
Prius, which is akin to Trekkies’ claiming they’re less nerdy
than “Star Wars” fans because the series has better writing.
As eco-friendly as the Jetta TDI may be, you’re not likely
to notice one in a crowded parking lot. And for a change, that’s
a good thing.

Engine: 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, with 140
horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque.
Transmission: Six-speed manual or six-speed DSG double-
clutch automatic.
Speed: 0 to 60 in under 8.5 seconds.
Gas mileage per gallon: 29 city, 40 highway.
Price as tested: $24,190.
Best feature: Great gas mileage in a drivable package.
Worst feature: Somewhat cramped interior.
Target buyer: The driver craving a high-mileage sedan sans
the dorky hybrid profile.

It never crossed my mind that soy - a favourite health food - might be toxic and dangerous. It wasn't the first time. Bottled water, margarine, and gluten grains all come to mind. But soy? The wonder bean?

I was faithful to the plant. I'd been a vegetarian for five years and though I now enjoy the multitude of benefits and gourmand delight that meat and seafood offer, I trusted in plants. Soy was something I'd celebrated, along with everyone else in Vancouver, in my hippie years. Later, even the men in my life enjoyed my "I Can't Believe it's Not Meat" stir fries. After moving back into the omnivore's diet that nature gave me, I still loved miso soup for breakfast and made an effort to regularly enjoy soy proteins.

Who didn't? Even Dad's got soymilk in the fridge- it's great for preventing prostate cancer, right? Even people who never got used to the taste- or shall I admit tastelessness- of soy added it in hopes of reaping the benefits of those amazing nutrients. Isoflavones, genisteins, lectins, saponins, and phytoestrogens- don't these wonderful names signal a whole host of cancer fighting, heart disease preventing, cholesterol-lowering miracles?

What if I said that those fancy words are actually toxins and the soya bean is naturally loaded with all of them? What if I told you that big business soy ran campaigns like Soy 2000 to convince us that these antinutrients were beneficial? What if I told you that soy is not a complete protein, is not widely used in Asia, and is incredibly dangerous for human consumption? What if I told you that the Food and Drug Administration lists soy as a poisonous plant?

The thyroid is a tiny butterfly-shaped gland in the throat. The rate of thyroid problems in North America is epidemic, especially among women. It's so common to have a thyroid disorder that it's easy to forget that's not the natural state of being. Because the thyroid regulates the entire endocrine system, the metabolism, and more, it's a very important body part. The most common disorder is hypothyroidism. This means the thyroid does not produce very much thyroid hormone, and the resulting quagmire of ailments is distressing to say the least - exhaustion, overweight, depression, hair that is dry, falls out, or won't grow, brittle nails, anxiety, skin disorders, feeling too hot or too cold all the time, menstrual problems, metabolic disorders, recurring infections, immune system fall-out, and a whole lot of other fun stuff. Untreated thyroid problems, or a thyroid that responds poorly to lifestyle change and medication, are gateways for a whole host of Hellish things from fibromyalgia to cancer.

When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism many years ago, it was something of a relief, despite the fact I was not thrilled to have a chronic and serious gland problem. But even less thrilling was the depression that had always hovered around me- I'm a cheerful, festive sort of person, and the unshakeable melancholy didn't seem like me. Worse still was the unexplainable weight gain and the exhaustion and picking up every last cold and flu and Bell's Palsy, a lovely thing that damages the facial nerves and has given me the lopsided features some find sexy, and my 'sneer'. Finding a reason for this slew of complaints that forced me take medical leave from work gave me hope for a vibrant future, or at least one I could make the best of.

The doctor suggested a few ways to support my health in addition to simply popping pills. I was mildly surprised that I was told to avoid soy foods. I learned the word 'goitrogen,' read a bit about thyroid-suppressing foods. I stopped eating all soy foods but didn't make a big deal- I also learned that peanuts, broccoli, and cabbage all have thyroid suppressing properties. Those were good healthy plants, too, just something to avoid the way fibromyalgia patients should avoid nightshade plants or celiacs should avoid wheat. Nothing more.

One day, my godchildren's mother was over, and she asked if I thought soymilk was safe for the kids. Safe? Never thought about it. The vegan girl in the circle said enthusiastically, "yes, of course," without question, which bothered me straight off the bat. Soymilk is way modern and loaded with sugar. For those reasons alone, I would have to say I wasn't sure. Julie borrowed a couple of my nutrition books. I had no idea whether soy was bad for everyone's thyroid or just mine, so I said I'd look it up.

I put on my Nancy Drew outfit and began some nutritional detective work. A clue here and there, some secret passages, a couple of bad guys named phytates and lectins later, I realized I was in the middle of a big ol' can of worms and the only way out was through, down the rabbit hole.

It all starts out rather confusingly- after all, hadn't everyone's favourite health dude Dr. Earl Mindell dubbed the nutrition phenomenon, "The Soy Miracle"? Sure enough, Mindell's Soy Miracle assures me (innocently enough, as the year is 1995, before the mother load of research gets unearthed) that soy is a good food for me. In fact, he writes about how beneficial it is to my thyroid. "Soy may somehow stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormone," he writes. This is immediately suspect, as the thyroid-lowering connection is well known, well established, and not controversial. A few pages extol the virtues of the perfect protein and cancer fighting wonder food. The rest shows a bunch of groovy recipes like the Tempeh Reuben sandwich.

Sounds tempting - but it sure doesn't take long in my new detective hat to see some suspicious handshaking. The good doctor thanks the United Soybean Board and Soy Foods Association of America straight off the bat for their help. Hmmmm...

Go figure- looks like many of us forgot the obvious adage Mom told us: if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Think about this: who told you that Asians eat a lot of soy, that they have for thousands of years, that they eat it instead of animal protein, and that soy is why they are so healthy? Soy is monk food, and what could be kinder or healthier than a monk's vegetarian diet?

So who said all this? Your Asian family or friends? Not mine. And here's something shocking: none of it is true.

It was one of the biggest industries in the world, soygriculture, who told you this. I thought it, too, but then I realized I don't really know a lot of Asian families intimately enough to know their customs. The ones I do know cook a great deal of pork, delicious vegetables and rice.

Bur Dr. Mindell says, "In many parts of Asia, soy foods are a dietary staple." But simply looking beyond the Soy Board's claims into history and anthropology, it doesn't take long at all to find out that in fact, the Chinese eat massive amounts of eggs and pork, and very little soy.

Mindell touts how Japan enjoys the longest life span, lower rates of colon, lung, breast and prostate cancer. "Judge for yourself," he says. And we did. We were presented with seemingly obvious information, but advertising is what it was. Because the truth is much different, and lower Asian cancer rates just might be from the lack of un-food in Asian diets and the masses of seafood they consume. The Japanese eat a few TABLESPOONS of soy a day as a condiment.

Monk food? Clean protein? The roots of soy are much more humble. Soybeans were used as crop fertilizer and livestock feed. Knowing soy could be harmful raw, the resourceful Asians made an art out of fermenting techniques to make them digestible. Hence, miso and tempeh, the most edible forms of soy, are important arts in Asian history. What about the nice monks? Moby's sarcasm may not be far off- does the high estrogen content in soy messes with testosterone, making monastic life a little easier on the celibate?

Still, what's the big deal? So it's not Asia's star dish. It's still the picture perfect glow of rosy health, right? A complete protein, low in fat, fighting off cancers and osteoporosis, lowering cholesterol, non-allergenic, brain-building, green, low carbon footprint, and yummy, too - right?

Not so fast. Concerned consumers in both the carnivore gourmands and the garden of Vegan groups are starting to suspect the reality might be more like this: gas, bloating, infant starvation, moobs, a whole host of thyroid problems, coronary disease, anaphylactic shock, Alzheimer's, serious endocrine disorders, a range of menstrual abnormalities and 'female problems,' cancer, low or nonexistent libido, puberty before age ten, hair loss and more. Could it really be? Aren't all of these things among the endless problems soy was going to prevent?

Hundreds of doctors and scientists and consumer advocates worldwide are now expressing concern and caution over soy. But one has devoted her research in recent years to the alarming topic.

"In the mid 1990s I started noticing a lot of articles with headlines like the 'joy of soy' or 'soy of cooking' and was entranced by the claims that soy was good for personal health and also the planet," Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel says. "The reality was another story. I was seeing a lot of sick vegetarians and other health conscious people who ate a lot of soy and seemed to be suffering greatly from it. That aroused my curiosity and I began researching the subject."

She is not a messenger for the dairy industry - she is a citizen and scientist concerned with faulty propaganda and real food. She exposed the soy industry's endless dirty secrets in her book The Whole Soy Story: the Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food.

While the vast sea of information online and in journals is confusing, jargon-riddled and often pits the debate as a vegetarian/meat-eater's one, Dr. Daniel's book is clear, organized, factual, meticulously documented, and explains all the hard words. Though Daniel, as a nutritionist, obviously sees wisdom in our natural hunter/gatherer diet, it's clear that soy is dangerous for meat eaters and vegetarians alike, and that we must all find alternative foods.

If only the problem were one little toxin. But it takes Daniel nearly 400 pages to cover all the info, plus 44 pages of study references, so that we can verify the sources for ourselves. "It was read for accuracy prior to publication by leading MDs, scientists and toxicologists. And my conclusions have certainly been validated by the recent warnings issued by the Israelis, French and Germans," Dr. Daniel says. This is solid science, but thankfully Daniel is also an engaging writer. "The studies come from a wide variety of sources - universities, clinics, FDA's Laboratory for Toxicological Research, USDA scientists, etc," she explains. "Many of the most damning studies were funded by the soy industry itself."

Here's a brief overview of Daniel's findings:

* soy oil was the first and primary profit centre for soy, and soy was largely responsible for the spread of hydrogenated or trans fats

* most soy is genetically modified

* soy farming is wreaking greater devastation on forests, cottage industries, and family farms than the cattle industry. (If you mistakenly thought soy was a bunch of hippie farmers, like I did, Dr. Daniel tells it like it is: "Let's name names. Monsanto, Dupont, Archer Daniels Midland, Solae . . . Nearly all the old hippie companies have been bought up by the big boys. For example, White Wave is owned by Dean Foods. Some of America's largest food companies now manufacture soy foods or use soy ingredients heavily in their products. Think Kraft, Kellogg, ConAgra, General Mills, Heinz, Unilever Best Foods and Dean Foods.")

* soy is a major allergen, and because it is used as filler in hundreds of products including meats and 'vegetable oil,' people with allergies may be at risk

* soy contains goitrogens, which damage the thyroid

* soy contains lectins, which cause red blood cells to lump together and may trigger abnormal immunity responses

* soy contains oligosaccarides, sugars that cause bloating and gas

* soy contains oxalates, which prevent calcium absorption, cause painful kidney stones and vulvodynia, a vaginal disorder

* many plant foods contain phytates and phytic acid, naturally occurring 'pesticides' to keep plants from being eaten while growing. phytates impair mineral absorption, and in fact, remove many minerals already in the body, including iron, zinc, and calcium. phytates in many foods are alleviated by cooking - soy's phytate levels are high and stubborn.

* isoflavones, lauded as natural estrogens, are serious endocrine disruptors, lowering testosterone, causing menstrual disorders, and cancer cell proliferation

* protease inhibitors interfere with digestive enzymes, saponins may lower good cholesterol and damage intestine

* that all of these plant chemicals can have benefits, and do exist in other foods, to varying levels of edibility: that soaking grains and fermenting beans are ancient food prep traditions

* soymilk is far from a natural food: it is filled with rancid fats and high in sugar

* soy cheeses are largely made with hydrogenated oils (safety level of hydrogenated products? ZERO)

* some health problems that may be associated with soy foods are: bladder, prostate, colorectal, thyroid and breast cancer; precancerous lesions; heart disease; type 2 diabetes; malnutrition; stunted growth; flatulence; pancreatic problems; low libido: early puberty; anemia; zinc deficiency; osteoporosis; intestinal damage; mal-absorption and leaky gut syndrome; kidney stones; allergies; infant death; immune system disruption; thyroid disease - and the list goes on.

This isn't the first time we've been concerned. Before the massive health movement of the late 80s and early 90s, all sorts of articles came out about soy safety. But hardly anyone liked the stuff anyhow, and vegetarians had yet to think of it as a food group. Soy decided to get a makeover, and save itself from the financial fallout that was nigh - when it's dirty toxic margarine secrets would inevitably leak out.

"By 1985, there was a considerable body of research from U.S. Government and university laboratories and British government institutions warning of the health dangers of soy foods, particularly to high-risk consumers such as infants and vegetarian women," says Dianne Gregg, writer of The Hidden Dangers of Soy, and survivor of soy-related illness that nearly killed her.

"These were published in scientific journals. In response, in 1985 the soy processing industry in the U.S. held a number of conferences and devised a program, 'Soy 2000,' the intent of which was to aggressively promote soy as a health food when they already knew it contained biologically active levels of toxins. This involved heavy political lobbying of Congress and Federal regulators, a vast advertising program, planting favorable articles in popular and academic media, obtaining huge Federal farming subsidies, and sponsorship of meetings by the U.S Department of Agriculture. The aim of Soy 2000 was to promote to the consumers that soy was a proven health food with no adverse effects. Their claim was that millions of Asians have been consuming soy in large quantities for thousands of years and are all remarkably healthy as a result. American consumers were expected to believe this, and most of us did!"

Soy's first incarnation in North American consumption was also a health food imposter. After millenniums of wisdom where humans used butter or lard or olive oil, good enough for the Bible and good enough for the world, suddenly margarine was "heart healthy" and "cholesterol-lowering." But lately, studies started talking about how heart disease INCREASED from this new artificial fat, hydrogenated margarine, which our body cannot recognize. OF course it did. This was not a real food.

Sound familiar? It is. Those who perceive of soy as innocent and concerned for your health may be surprised at how big a player soy was in the hydrogenation revolution. Most hydrogenated oil was soy. Now, even junk makers like chips and fast food have pulled these artificial fats out of their products. Hydrogenated oils are liquid plastic and they are poisonous. Most governments place safe consumption levels at ZERO.

Clearly soy, which still defends hydrogenation, did not then have our best health interests in mind, just profit. When the tide turned, they turned up the noise on how healthy soy is, and it became a health food, its history in margarine conveniently blotted from public consciousness.

While the health dangers are considerably ominous, not everyone is in immediate danger of death. But Dianne Gregg came within inches of her life.

Gregg had never been a vegetarian, but slim, health-conscious, and staring menopause head-on, she decided to take charge of her health and began eating soy. "I started to include soy protein drinks for breakfast, and protein bars as a snack. For eight years I was constantly nauseous, bloated, and gaining weight each year. I knew something was wrong but the doctors said it was normal and to accept that I was getting older. In April 2003, I had a soy veggie burger for dinner and that is what did me in. This was the first time I had one. The next morning I was rushed to the hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack ? but I went into anaphylactic shock."

"After four days in the intensive care unit, the doctors diagnosed food poisoning, but I didn't agree. By now I weighed 150lbs. That was more than I weighed in my ninth month of pregnancy!"

Dianne went home, and didn't eat much of anything for a while. When she recovered from her mystery illness, she started her day again with her soy health drink. She began having palpitations and other symptoms. Linking the reaction to the soy, she began her internet research, and found that in addition to very common and possibly deadly allergies, soy is implicated in hundreds of deadly or chronic diseases. Other consumers may not be linking their health problems with their health food. So Gregg wrote her book, The Hidden Dangers of Soy (www.hiddensoy.com).

"My intention was not to bash the soy industry but to make the public aware of what the Western version of soy contains, and that if they are not feeling like themselves, or are developing health issues, to try and eliminate soy and see if they don't feel better. In my book, I have testimonials from others with real horror stories that never attributed it to soy products."

Part of the 'hidden danger' is what's hidden. Gregg says that soy is hiding in everything from meat to chocolate to oil, so people hoping to avoid it don't usually do a good job. "The number of processed and manufactured foods that contain soy ingredients today is astounding. It can be hard to find foods that don't contain soy flour, soy oil, lecithin (extracted from soy oil and used as an emulsifier in high-fat products), soy protein isolates and concentrates, textured vegetable protein (TVP), hydrolyzed vegetable protein (usually made from soy) or unidentified vegetable oils. Most of what is labeled 'vegetable oil' in the U.S. is actually soy oil, as are most margarines. Soy oil is the most widely used oil in the U.S., accounting for more than 75 percent of our total vegetable fats and oil intake. It's found in margarine, shortenings, frozen dinners, canned tuna, mayonnaise, breads, cookies, crackers, canned soup, breakfast cereals, and fast foods to name a few."

Gregg says many women keep eating soy in hope of the benefits, and end up with hypothyroidism. While contributors to the thyroid epidemic may include hormonal birth control products, fluoride content in water, stress, and sugar, soy's strength as an endocrine disruptor should not be underestimated. Especially with soy hidden throughout many foods - you can't eat uncooked broccoli, another goitrogenic food, in high quantities by mistake, for example ? even those who choose not to eat soy may be eating a lot of soy!

Another person who is very concerned about thyroid health is Mary J. Shomon, a patient advocate and best-selling author, whose many books on thyroid and autoimmune diseases I have read and enjoyed, notably Living Well With Hypothyroidism. Shomon is not an anti-soy crusader by any stretch. Her research and advocacy is concerned only with the thyroid. She has no vested interest in vegetarian/omnivore battles, soy business practices, or anything else that remotely relates to my story, except as it may or may not affect the thyroid.

It has been a well-documented fact for decades that soy foods lower thyroid hormone (Drs Doerge and Chang, FDA, Division of Biochemical Toxicology, for starters, and more from 50 years of diverse sources). But the Soyfoods Association of North America is not very concerned about my health. They cheerfully tell me, "Like other plant foods that contain goitrogens, soy can be part of a healthy diet." (Cooking broccoli or peanuts destroys their lower levels of goitrogens, but cooking soy does little to remove them.) They tell me that soy does not cause thyroid problems in healthy people (though even small amounts of the food in a daily diet have been shown to slow a normal thyroid.) They tell me to get enough iodine, which is fair enough, and to take my medicine in between meals so that the soy won't affect the absorption.

Shomon says, "I think that you need to consider the messenger. The soy industry has a vested interest in promoting soy, and downplaying any potential negatives. Again, some soy can have a place in a healthy diet, but stick with the fermented forms you find in Asian foods, like tempeh, tofu, miso, and use it, like the Asians do, more as a condiment." She says, " if over-consumed, especially in its processed, isoflavone-heavy forms, it can have detrimental effects on thyroid health. Soy is a goitrogen, a food that has the ability to slow down the thyroid gland. In some people, over-consumption of soy can trigger a thyroid condition -- or aggravate an existing one."

For the record, I contacted the Soyfoods Association of North America by telephone and email to ask about these claims and to ensure fair storytelling as a journalist whose only vested interest is the truth, not profit or ideology. No representative from any of the soy boards returned my contact.

By far one of the most thorough, informative and wide-ranging info portals on soy danger is Soy Online Services, in New Zealand. Associated with Dick and Valerie James, the content-heavy site shows no agenda but to help people dismantle the confusing array of information. No membership, no fees, no hidden agenda- just the facts, ma'am. Dick James has been correcting misinformation for years, writing letters to governments and health providers on his own time and own dime. His formidable efforts to spread his truth are honourable- Dick has never taken a dime for this time, or for Soy Online Services.

For the Jameses, it all began when his prized parrots began getting sick and dying after switching to miracle-soy-based-bird-food, he decided to get to the bottom of the issue and found astounding horrors surrounding soy foods. A dear young friend also died somewhat mysteriously, and that's how they started researching soy. They launched a legal investigation to get to the bottom of the bird-food issue, as well as the human health implications, and so began Soy Online Services.

Dick James is a man who has generously given his time and energy to educating people about their health. He says it's a "fallacy is to think that vegetarianism equates to soy consumption. It does not." Vegetarians used to eat a wider spectrum of food. Because of marketing and industrial politics, soy is everywhere, even in bird food.

The internet is abuzz with theories hoping to defame the cozy circle of soy opponents, many whom, like the James', are affiliated with the Weston Price Foundation (www.westonaprice.org.) Dr. Kaayla Daniel serves on the board of directors. The foundation follows the nutrition research of Dr. Weston Price, a dentist who wandered the globe studying the diets of diverse people. The foundation heavily encourages traditional diets based on animal foods and vegetables. Their agenda doesn't scare me away: I have a deep respect for the Weston Price research, and these people work hard to advocate safe, humane farming practices, chemical-free food, and old fashioned methods of fermentation and soaking. The diet may sound funny to those used to boxes and cans, but any student of world cuisine or of history and anthropology can tell these are hardly off the wall. Dr. Daniel says, "The Weston Price Foundation is supported by membership dues and private donations and receives no funding from the beef or dairy industries. We recommend an omnivorous diet that includes free-range eggs, grass-fed meat and raw dairy products from happy, pastured cows, but such products do not come from factory farming operations or corporate agribusiness. We support small farmers, humane treatment of animals, sustainable and organic agriculture and the consumer's right to obtain fresh healthy foods directly from local farmers."

The good sense of sustainable and humane farming and traditional food preparation get lost in the extravagant propaganda. "It's all about money. Soybeans were first heavily grown here for the soy oil? the one used most often in margarines and shortenings. But once processors took the oil out of the soybean, they had a lot of soy protein left over. The question was whether they should take it to the landfill and pay to dump it or turn it into another profit centre. Soy protein would make an excellent fertilizer, but unfortunately the chemical fertilizer companies had that market cornered. It is used as a primary ingredient in animal foods, but there are limits on how much they can safely feed to animals... It was initially hard to sell people on the idea of eating soy because it was perceived as either a poverty food or a hippie food. Then marketing experts changed the image of soy to an upscale 'health food.'

And that dear readers, is why all of us think this toxic waste, not healthy enough for animal feed, is a wonder food.

Not everyone is as concerned about phytic acid or lectins as Daniel, James, Gregg and myself. Dino Sarma is a passionate vegan chef with a degree in biology. Though vegetarianism was not historically synonymous with soy-eating, it is now, and Sarma's cookbook, The Alternative Vegan, was the only one I could source that was vegetarian and soy-free.

"Most vegans in the USA and Europe don't really bother with actual vegetables," Sarma laments. "Alternative Vegan is so named because it provides an alternative to your typical vegan cookbook, where it seems like soy and other meat/dairy analogues are so pervasive that non-vegans often feel that you can't eat a vegan diet without them."

Sarma's lively cookbook is teeming with inspiration from India- stuff he learned from mom. He has a flair for international cuisine, and likes to be able to recognize how his food started out. He recalls fondly the markets in Chennai, where people, vegetarian or not, ate a variety of produce. "I can remember the boisterous shouting of the vendors?the sheer amount of colours and smells that surrounded me. I also remember the stunning variety. Spinach did not mean a selection of one or two types of leaves?more like ten or fifteen, each season. ..Squashes and gourds abounded. Jackfruit, lychee, mango, papaya, guava, grapes?the long bananas, the short skinny ones?." Sounds like paradise to me, too.

Most of his recipes are meals simply put together from the produce aisle. He likes to keep things cheap, and he likes to avoid weird ingredients you can't pronounce. There were already more than enough soy cookbooks flooding the market. And while Sarma is not impressed by pricey, flavourless soy 'meats,' he didn't avoid soy because he finds it unhealthy. "Most of my readers aren't really all that concerned about soy, and just like simple, tasty, healthy food," he says. He doesn't worry about getting enough soy for protein. "All food contains proteins in varying amounts," he says. "Get enough calories, and your protein will take care of itself? Eat a varied diet, including lots of whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat berries, millet, quinoa, amaranth,) dark green leafy vegetables (mustard greens, kale, collard greens, radish greens, wild spinach), fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and some beans, nuts, and legumes to round out your meals." I highly recommend Sarma's book to anybody: vegetables are not just for vegetarians!

As a science major, he's heard the words phytates and saponins before. "If I were to get scared of everything with saponins, I'd also be avoiding yucca, tomato, grapes," he says. Phytates, lectins, these are "commonly found in animal feeds." As for saponins: "Again, the high levels of saponins is found in the feed for dogs, but hasn't been really linked to human food."

Sarma believes in living compassionately and says going vegan is one of the best things he ever did for himself and the world, but that he doesn't ever see a reason "to be a jerk about it." He likes to educate people through colourful produce and joyful eating. And while he does not cook with soy in The Alternative Vegan, he says he has yet to see study against soy that convinces him. When I ask him what he believes, he says, "I don't like to use the word 'believe' when it comes to scientific data. Amen. Exactly. And after I did, you can be sure I will enjoy wonderful vegetables of every kind, but I will never touch anything- not chocolate, not tuna fish, not salad dressing- that contains unfermented soy, ever again- and as for fermented, I love my tamari on sushi, but that's about all I'll risk.

After the margarine debacle, soygriculture just got lucky. Other food issues like mercury in fish or pesticide-riddled oranges were their own issues, not a spiritual war between two opposing camps. Soy just happened to be there, pumping its health-makeover propaganda just as the vegetarian-meat debate revved up. That debate won't ever be resolved, because people all over the world eat all kinds of different weird things, from insects to blubber to nothing but olives. The vegan versus omnivore question has nothing to do with soy, which is bad for both groups.

But the soy market saw a perfect opportunity to pit big business against two groups that consisted of citizens with a similar concern- what to safely put in our mouths. Soy conveniently became an emotional, spiritual issue: saying soy is bad is the same as saying 'you shouldn't be a vegetarian.' But it isn't. It's just saying soy is bad for you, same as soda or sugar are bad for you. Except that soy might be worse!

If you only read one thing on the topic, make sure it's Dr. Kaayla Daniel's expose. "It's sad that so many people feel that all information must be financially motivated. The truth is that neither I nor New Trends Publishing has ever accepted any funds from the beef or dairy industries or from any government agency."

Meanwhile, Big Soy is happily pocketing everyone's money while they defend one of the most deceptive businesses of all time. Dr. Daniel says many- meat eaters and vegans- have read her work. " I think they owe it to themselves and certainly to their children to educate themselves. Many who have taken that step have come back to me with thanks."

The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food.

If you've ever wondered how a slick prosecutor would throw the book at a beleagured health food, this book's for you. But reader beware: there's no defense attorney in the courtroom that is The Whole Soy Story. Unless you're an expert on the voluminous science of soy or have a few months to pore through medical journals fact-checking author cum prosecutor Kaayla Daniel's forty-four pages of references (and the important references she left out), you may find it hard not to be bamboozled by her slick 394-page indictment. But if you do know enough about the science of soy to catch Daniel attempting to pull the wool over your eyes over and over again, you'll write this book off as an outrageously tainted resource that can't be trusted.

It's not entirely surprising, given Daniel's background.

Most of the so-called “soy-bashing” you can find on the Internet and in print can be traced to Sally Fallon and Sue Enig, the food activists who run the Weston A. Price Foundation, and lately to their protegee and fellow Weston Price board member, Kaayla Daniel. The Whole Soy Story is edited by Fallon who owns the small book company that publishes it.

According to the Weston A. Price Foundation's website, its mission is “to disseminate the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston Price....Dr. Price's research demonstrated that humans achieve perfect physical form and perfect health generation after generation only when they consume nutrient-dense whole foods and the vital fat-soluble activators found exclusively in animal fats.” (Emphasis mine.)

For Weston A. Price Foundation food activists, the 1930s research and speculation of a Cleveland dentist have translated into an aggressive 21st century bias against plant sources of fat and protein. Soy – a major competitor with the butter, lard, pork and other animal fat and protein sources promoted by the Foundation – is squarely in their sights. The Weston Price gang is so determined to throw everything they can at soy and hope it sticks that they spin and distort the evidence to the point of making their critiques useless for consumers who hunger for a fair reckoning, for the real whole story. Like Fallon and Enig's articles, Daniel's book teems with one-sided errors, exaggerations and half-truths. I will give a few examples here. * Building her case mostly on a selective reading of animal studies (a common thread throughout the book), Daniel suggests that the rise in soy consumption in the West could be a cause of rising thyroid cancer rates. “Soy can almost certainly be blamed for at least some of the increase in thyroid cancers in that soy isoflavones [weak, estrogen-like compounds found naturally in soy] induce both goiters and thyroid tumours,” she asserts. I searched Medline (the index of the world's biomedical research) for an unbiased overview of the research on “thyroid neoplasms” (benign or malignant thyroid tumours) and “soy.” I found just three papers, none of which Daniel thought important enough to tell her readers about (ironic, because Daniel is always quick to accuse soy-friendly scientists and “soy apologists” of suppressing evidence – even when they're not: for example, see the letter from Dr. B. L. Strom in Mothering). One study found that high doses of soy isoflavones failed to increase the effect of a thyroid carcinogen in rats. In the other two papers (here and here), researchers from the Northern California Cancer Center sought to find out why Southeast Asian women living in the United States have a high rate of thyroid cancer. Soy wasn't one of the reasons. Women who consumed the most soy had nearly half the risk of those who consumed the least.
* Daniel cites a five-year clinical trial in which six out of 179 postmenopausal women taking a very high dosage (150 mg) soy isoflavone supplement developed endometrial hyperplasia. None of the 197 women who took a placebo did. “Endometrial proliferation is a precursor of cancer,” Daniel warns, implying the women can look forward to a date with the oncologist. She doesn't mention that all of them developed the relatively benign, non-atypical form of endometrial hyperplasia. Research suggests this condition carries a 2% risk of progressing to endometrial cancer - little different from the 1 to 2% risk for women in general.

* Nor does Daniel reassure her readers that, a year earlier, a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that women who had spontaneously consumed the most dietary soy isoflavones were 40 percent less likely than those who consumed the least to have been diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Among the postmenopausal women in the study (they're at highest risk), soy was associated with a 56% lower risk. According to the authors of the study: "Only one [other] study has directly examined the effects of phytoestrogen-rich foods on endometrial cancer risk (16). In Hawaii’s multiethnic population, greater consumption of tofu alone or in combination with other soy products was associated with a 50% reduction in endometrial cancer risk." Daniel goes to great lengths to convince readers that soy will put them at risk for pancreatic cancer. “As for the rising rate of pancreatic cancer,” she writes, “scientists have known for half a century that trypsin inhibitors in soy protein put stress on the pancreas, contributing to and possibly causing pancreatic cancer (see Chapter 16).” In a pretense to objectivity, she advises: “As yet, human studies do not clearly connect soy protease inhibitors to pancreatic cancer. However....” Not included in Daniel's “howevers” (notably, soy seems to make the pancreas secrete more digestive enzymes) are any of the studies that have actually looked at soy consumption and pancreatic cancer in humans.
o In a 1996 study from Sapporo Medical University in Japan, people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer were significantly more likely than healthy controls to a) eat more “meats and animal viscera” and b) eat less “vegetables and the traditional Japanese foods, e.g., tofu, deep-fried tofu, raw fish, and tempura.”
o Eight years later, in a similar study from the same institute, the researchers found that "consumption of fish, all soybean products, tofu (bean curds), and natto (fermented soybeans) was associated with decreased risk" of pancreatic cancer. Comparing subjects who ate the most (top 25%) with those who ate the least (bottom 25%), the risk reduction was approximately 50% for fish, tofu and all soybean products combined - and 75% for natto. Moderate meat consumption doubled the risk compared to low consumption.
o Finally, in a 1988 American study that followed 34,000 healthy California Seventh-day Adventists for seven years, "increasing consumption of vegetarian protein products, beans, lentils, and peas as well as dried fruit was associated with highly significant protective relationships to pancreas cancer risk." While I've only read the abstract of this study, among Seventh-day Adventists - a large proportion of whom are vegetarian - "vegetarian protein products" and beans largely equate to soy. Indeed, the abstract attributes the anti-cancer effect to "frequent consumption of vegetables and fruits high in protease-inhibitor content." Ironically, it's these protease inhibitors - which abound in soy - that Daniel uses weak animal and human evidence to smear as instigators of pancreatic failure and cancer. If only she had told her readers about the studies that "clearly [fail to] connect soy protease inhibitors to pancreatic cancer."
* Daniel is constantly alleging or insinuating that scientists who publish soy-friendly research are in the pocket of the soy industry. None of the three soy-positive studies above for which I was able to find funding information online declared any support from industry. Rather, all or most support came from the National Cancer Institute of the United States.

Among doctors like Andrew Weil and scientists with no axe to grind, the prevalent view is that one, two, or even three servings of soy per day are safe, nutritious and possibly preventive of such diseases as prostate cancer and osteoporosis. (Some soy-friendly doctors like Andrew Weil are wary of highly processed soy protein “isolates,” “concentrates” and similar refined soy products. Daniel demonizes them as one step up from toxic industrial waste.) There are only a few caveats in most scientists' minds: soy eaters with hypothyroidism may need to up their dosage of thyroid hormone; those who are iodine-deficient may become hypothyroid if they eat too much; and soy may add fuel to the fire of estrogen-positive breast cancer (or it may fight or prevent it – the jury is out).

While the vast majority of studies of soy and health are neutral or positive, it has to be said that a small proportion of weak, preliminary or otherwise inconclusive studies suggest soy may increase the risk of other health disorders. These include bladder cancer; leukemia and developmental disorders in fetuses and infants overexposed to soy; and Alzheimer's disease in adults. I know that sounds scary, but statistically one would expect one in every 20 studies to give a negative finding about soy by chance alone. Even scarier, in my view, is a health book that persistently misleads and manipulates readers while pretending to enlighten them.

Ein Rentenhändler über Hintergründe des Finanzsystems und Abgründe bei Lebensversicherungen. Nach Bad Bank Bad Lebensversicherung?
Der große Knall steht noch bevor. "Unsere Kinder werden uns dies für unser ganzes Leben vorwerfen und spätere Generationen werden mit dem Finger auf unsere heutige Unverantwortlichkeit zeigen."

Die nachfolgenden Ausführungen beziehen sich auf einen Briefverkehr eines Anleihenhändlers mit dem --->Heibel-Ticker

Ich bin seit 25 Jahren beruflich in der Wertpapierbranche - seit 12 Jahren selbständiger Wertpapiermakler im Schwerpunkt Rentenhandel - aber durchaus sehr gut, beruflich bedingt, mit Politik und Wirtschaft vertraut. Aktienhandel incl. - insofern denke ich weiß ich auch, über was ich schreibe.

Jetzt werde ich Ihnen mal ein Interna nennen: Früher haben alle Lebensversicherungen auf 30 Jahre SSD gekauft (Schuldscheindarlehen von Unternehmen, also direkte Kredite von bestimmten Unternehmen). Plain Vanilla Scheine ("reine Vanille", also Schuldscheine ohne irgendwelche Sonderregelungen oder Strukturen, damit sie mit entsprechenden Scheinen anderer Unternehmen vergleichbar sind) - mit nicht sehr viel Rendite, aber recht sicher.

Seit 5-6 Jahren lief mein Geschäft immer schlechter, da diese Versicherungen nur noch Strukturen von Mathematikern in den Banken über London gekauft haben. Reine Wetten. Tritt dies mit einer Wahrscheinlichkeit von 50% ein, dann rechnet man das für jedes Jahr auf 30 Jahre hoch. Wieviel "?" bleiben da? Hunderte ob das so aufgeht.

Aber es wurde gemacht. Fast alle Lebensversicherungen haben nur noch langlaufende Wetten in Ihren Beständen. Und diese Wetten sind heute nichts mehr wert. Wollen Sie die gesamte Versicherungsbranche auch in eine Bad-Versicherung stecken? Das ist ein Fass ohne Boden. Fangen Sie mit den Banken an und dann wird die Branche der Versicherung, die aktuell sehr bemüht sind diese Details nicht zu offenbaren, freiwillig an die Öffentlichkeit gehen um diese Hilfe zu erhalten. Mein Rat an Sie - meiden Sie Lebensversicherungen wie der Teufel das Weihwasser.

Verfluchen Sie nicht den einzelnen Banker - der hat nur seinen Job gemacht - er wurde zum Verkauf gedrängt von oben. Verfluchen Sie lieber die ganzen Mathematiker, die von den Vorständen eingekauft wurden, um das große Geld zu machen. Denn diese Konstrukte sind heute keinen Cent mehr wert. Das große Heulen und Jammern wird erst noch richtig kommen. Die Bad Bank aber ist der Schlechteste aller Wege.

Als Rentenmakler vermittle ich festverzinsliche Wertpapiere zwischen Banken im Depot A Bereich (Hauptkonten der Kunden) und auch zwischen Banken und Versicherungen. Eigentlich sollte man denken die Banken hätten selber genügend qualifizierte Leute für diesen Job. Aber leider stellen die Banken Wertpapierberater oder besser "Wertpapierverkäufer" nur für den Kundenbereich ein. Die eigenen Anlagen der Banken werden erst seit kurzer Zeit von den WP-Handelsabteilungen mit bearbeitet. Bei einigen Banken macht das noch heute der Vorstand oder die Leitung der Abteilung Rechnungswesen. Beide haben von Wertpapieren nur Grundahnungen und so kaufen die das, was ihnen vom Verband empfohlen wird - oder von Maklern wie mir.

Und der Verband - DZ-Bank, WGZ etc. oder Landesbanken haben seit Jahren nur noch "Strukturen" mit großer Gewinnmarge verkauft. Der Vorteil hier: Man konnte sich massiv seine Provision reinrechnen, keiner merkte es und nach außen sah diese Anlage noch deutlich besser aus als vergleichbare festverzinsliche Wertpapiere. Also hat jeder dieses Zeug verkauft.

Und das ganz Verrückte: Die allererste "Struktur" kam Ende1995/Anfang 1996 in Deutschland heraus. Die hatte ich damals auch mit angeboten, weil ich dies selber noch nicht durchschaut hatte. Und genau in diesem Monat hatte ich mein bestes Verkaufsergebnis aller Zeiten. Hunderte von Volksbanken und Sparkassen wollten über mich das Ding kaufen. Habe das dann 1 Jahr mitgemacht und mir eine goldene Nase daran verdient - bis eine Bank mal so eine Struktur bei mir verkaufen wollte.

Man konnte diese Anlage nicht mehr preisen - sprich bewerten. Unverkäuflich. Es wurden dann zwar Systeme entwickelt, wo es möglich war einen Rückkaufpreis zu geben, dieser war aber mit riesigen Abschlägen verbunden. Ein wirklich schlechtes Geschäft für jemand, der diese Struktur vorzeitig verkaufen wollte.

1997 war mir klar - wenn ich das weiter anbiete, dann werde ich all meine Kunden verlieren. Also ließ ich per sofort die Finger davon. Ironie der Geschichte: Ich verlor trotzdem fast alle meine Kunden. Begründung: Alle(!) Banken wollten danach nur noch dieses Zeug kaufen. Die waren süchtig danach! Und ich hatte plötzlich sehr schwere Jahre.

Gottlob liefen die Strukturen, die ich früher verkaufte meist nur 5 Jahre, so dass ich mir nie vorwerfen muss, dass ich das ganze Desaster mit zu verantworten habe. Es ist wie bei einem Schneeballsystem. Die Ersten gewinnen, die Letzten werden gebissen und bleiben auf der Strecke. Hätte ich weitergemacht, hätte ich noch sehr viele ertragreiche Jahre gesehen, könnte mich heute aber nicht mehr im Spiegel betrachten. Ohne mich loben zu wollen, tauschte ich im Jahr 2001 bereits meine gesamte (!) Altersversicherung in Goldmünzen - meine Frau hält mich heute noch dafür für absolut verrückt!

Zum Thema Versicherungen: Anfang 2000 fingen die Lebensversicherungen an - auch da waren viele früher meine Kunden - z.B. auch die Debeka LV oder Allianz LV auf 30-jährige Strukturen umzusteigen. Auch diese Kunden verlor ich. 2006 rief ich nochmals bei einigen dieser Versicherungen an - die einheitliche Aussage war (ContiVers. zumindest bei mir mal ausgenommen): "Nur 30jährige Strukturen, am besten mit einem ausländischen - spanischen oder britischen oder italienischen Emittenten. Bringt die größten Profite. Oder Strukturen von Sparkassen oder Volksbanken sind erwünscht."

Im Detail: Eine Sparkasse will sich Geld günstig besorgen. Die Landesbank geht an z.B. Goldman Sachs in London, macht auf diesen Sparkassenschuldschein eine 30jährige Struktur mit vielen, sehr vielen Derivaten darauf - sprich Wetten und saust dann zur Debeka LV und verkauft diese denen - konkurrenzlos günstig im Gegensatz zu normalen SSD (Schuldscheindarlehen). Problem - das Ding besteht nur noch aus Wetten und ist dann eben unverkäuflich.

Eine Versicherung aber hat das Problem normalerweise nicht, denn sie lässt ja einfach diese Modelle im Bestand liegen. Auch müssen die nicht so wie die Banken mit täglichen Kursen bilanzieren. Eine Wette kann man preisen, viele Wetten ist eine reine Stochastik-Rechnung - klappt nur, wenn man die Wahrscheinlichkeit definieren kann. Das ist heute völlig ausgeschlossen. Durch Vertrauensverlust.

Und die Versicherungen waren völlig begeistert von diesem Dreck. Übel sieht es aus, wenn diese 30-jährigen Anlagen in der Bilanz der Versicherung nicht mehr ausgewiesen werden können. Außer Strukturen wurden nur noch Nachränge bei den Versicherungen gekauft. Also Papiere die bei Insolvenz ganz am Schluss bedient werden. Was anderes wollten die nicht mehr.

Diese "Penner" entschuldigen Sie bitte, aber da fällt mir kein anderes Wort für ein, haben teilweise gar nicht kapiert was sie da kauften und hielten sich für überschlau. Und ich musste mir anhören, dass an mir die Zeichen der Zeit vorbeigeflogen sind. Sprich, ich bin überholt mit meinen Angeboten - viel zu konservativ - so brauch ich nicht mehr zu kommen. Tolle Aussage an die Adresse eines Wertpapiermaklers!!

Anderes Beispiel: Heute erfuhr ich von einem Freund bei der SEB, dass die SEB-Bank weiterhin ihre Wertpapierberater dazu anhält, diese Sachen (Strukturen) zu verkaufen. Nur, dass nun die meisten Kunden etwas schlauer sind und dieses Zeug jetzt nicht mehr anpacken. Was macht die SEB-Zentrale? Sie gibt Abmahnungen an ihre Mitarbeiter raus wegen schlechten Verkaufsergebnissen. Denn das wäre der Bereich, wo die Bank Gewinne machen könne, wenn man ein guter Verkäufer wäre. Also sind es schlechte Verkäufer und handeln nicht im Sinne der Bank! Stuttgart als Filiale wurde gerade aufgelöst von denen - die wollen noch rausholen, was irgend möglich ist.

Und nun denken Sie, dass eine Lösung gefunden werden muss in Richtung Bad Bank und dass danach so etwas nicht mehr passiert. Oder passieren darf. Es wird immer (!) das verkauft werden, was die höchsten Profite abwirft. Und das ist meist die schlechteste Alternative für den Kunden.

Sprich es geht dann alles so weiter wie vorher. Lösungsmöglichkeit von mir: Lasst uns den Karren ganz sauber bereinigen - es wird viel Wehgeschrei kommen, viele werden viel verlieren, vielleicht gehen die Leute auf die Straße, es wird uns gemessen an heute nicht gut gehen - aber dann kann zumindest ein Neuanfang passieren (nur dann) - mit einer dann wieder goldgedeckten Währung. Machen wir nichts in der Richtung wird es irgendwann sogar Kriege geben - und das halte ich für wesentlich schlimmer. Und unsere Kinder werden uns dies für unser ganzes Leben vorwerfen und spätere Generationen werden mit dem Finger auf unsere heutige Unverantwortlichkeit zeigen.

Wollen wir das? Für etwas anderes ist es zu spät, denn dieses kaputte Finanzsystem ist definitiv erledigt! Es kann nur noch verzögert werden. Nur wie lange?

Nachdem ich vermutlich mit dem Goldkauf wesentlich früher dran war wie Sie - kaufen Sie weiter was das Zeug hält - und meiden Sie die angeblich so tollen Gold-ETFs. Bei einer richtigen Krise sind die rein gar nichts wert. Auch wenn es anders hingestellt wird. Denn es ist trotz allem Papier. Aber ich brauche über solche Punkte bei Freunden nicht zu sprechen: Eswill keiner hören.

Die Aussage meiner Freunde oder auch von meiner Frau geschweige denn der einfachen Menschen auf der Straße: "Es wird alles gut werden, es wurde immer alles gut und man vermiest sich mit solch dunklen Gedanken nur sein Leben." Lebensversicherungen verkaufen, so wie ich es empfehle und lange schon empfahl?

Öfters habe ich das angesprochen - die halten mich alle für gaga. Also bin ich ruhig geworden - vom Mahner zum Schweiger. Nur zu meiner Entlastung: Ich bin kein Untergangsprophet - es wird langfristig immer eine Lösung geben. Aber die wird verdammt schmerzhaft für uns alle.

Ein Währungsschnitt oder eine komplett neue Währung bei den Amerikanern - das halte ich für keine Spekulation - es wird so kommen. Es gibt ja Spekulationen über den AMERO - diese hielt ich anfangs für unrealistisch - mittlerweile rechne ich fest damit. Denn die USA scheinen ihre Währung absichtlich in den Abgrund zu fahren. Da deutet einiges darauf hin. Wenn das aber gewollt ist, dann haben einige der ganz reichen Elite schon jetzt auf diese Zeit spekuliert.

Strukturen

Bei Endkunden - die Kunden die solche Bonds oder Knock-Out etc. bei Banken kaufen, werden sie "strukturierte Produkte" genannt. Im Wertpapierhandel spricht man meist nur von "Strukturen", da diese "gebastelt" werden, je für die Bedürfnisse, was gefordert wird. Sprich: "Ich suche eine Struktur mit verschiedenen Call-Möglichkeiten" Das war so ein geflügelter Satz!

Das passiert im Normalfall erst ab 10 Mio Euro aufwärts. Unter 5 Mio lief eigentlich gar nichts. Ab 10 Mio waren teilweise ein paar Sonderwünsche mit eingerechnet. Hoher Kupon auf die ersten 2-3 Jahre, damit das Grundergebnis der Versicherung vorerst besser aussieht und weniger Rendite dann nach hinten raus.

WKNs wurden bei solchen Produkten meistens nicht vergeben. Das hatte den Grund, dass die Versicherungen meist Namenspapiere wollten. Und es war billiger ohne WKN und Börsenzulassung - und auch weniger Aufsicht.

Für Banken dagegen wurden manchmal IHS gestrickt von solchen Emittenten wie Lehman oder Goldman oder JP Morgan, fast immer über London. Dort konnte auf Wunsch eine WKN angelegt werden, war aber meist auch nicht üblich. Habe hier mal 2 recht typische Strukturen mit WKN: ABN1WQ oder A0TUQG. Müssen Sie sich mal im Detail ansehen. Und auf die Handelbarkeit achten.

Wesentlich häufiger aber waren eben Namenspapiere mit Strukturen: Ein konkretes Beispiel: Noch 2006 herausgegeben an eine Versicherung - heute völlig unverkäuflich: 2 Jahre Verzinsung zu 4% bis zum 25.05.2008 danach Faktor 5,4 mal (30-Jahre Swap minus 2-Jahre Swap) mindestens 0% max. 7%. Laufzeit bis 25.5.2020.

Bei einer inversen Zinsstruktur - so wie wir es jetzt einige Zeit hatten, fliegt Ihnen das Ding um die Ohren. Also 0% Verzinsung. Gut werden Sie jetzt sagen, dann bleibt immer noch das eingesetzte Kapital. Nur da war sehr oft Lehmann der Emittent. Also wertlos.

Selbst wenn es Goldman oder Merrill Lynch war, für Namenspapiere die ungedeckt sind, werden mittlerweile von keiner Bank der Welt mehr Rücknahmekurse gestellt. Sprich: Die Versicherung hat bis zum 25.5.2020 einen 0%er im Bestand zu wahrscheinlich 30-50 Mio Euro (das waren bei Versicherungen die Durchschnittsgrößen pro Position(!!!)) und die Papiere sind bis dahin völlig unverkäuflich.

Wobei eine übernehmende Bank für solche Forderungen im Normalfall einen Ausschluss bei der Übernahme beantragt. Nur die gesicherten und gedeckten Papiere werden in so einem Falle bedient. Feine Sache was?

Und damit sind unsere LV bis zur Halskrause voll. Sprich die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Rückzahlung ist gering, der Zinszahlung fast ausgeschlossen und das Risiko auf lange Zeit nach hinten verlagert. Nur, dass die Versicherungen gleichzeitig fällige LV ausbezahlen sollen.

Von was frage ich Sie nun? Da die LV zudem keine Renditen mehr bieten, werden kaum noch neue abgeschlossen. Heißt kein frisches Geld. Das System funktioniert aber nur so, dass neues Geld her muss, um die Versicherungen ausbezahlen zu können. Also muss die Versicherung an die Substanz gehen. Dort befinden sich aber eben mittlerweile fast nur noch unverkäufliche Strukturen. Wird Ihnen das Problem bewußt? Es wird verkauft was da ist.

Für Aktien bekommt man wenig, aber zumindest noch etwas - also werden die verkäuflichen Pfandbriefe/Namenspapiere von Sparkassen oder Volksbanken oder Geschäftsbanken welche gedeckt sind zu Schleuderpreisen verkauft - sprich wir bewegen uns auch von dieser Seite auf einen Rentenknall/crash zu, denn da gibt es noch einiges an Beständen und die Versicherungen wollen ja nicht öffentlich auffliegen, denn sonst zieht jeder sein Geld von den Versicherungen ab. Jeder der zumindest denken kann. Ein kaputter und trauriger Kreislauf.

Nein, habe kein Problem damit wenn Sie mich zitieren. Aber denken Sie immer an eines: Es wird so gut wie keiner zugeben. Fragen Sie eine Versicherung - man wird Ihnen immer sagen, dass alles sicher ist. Das ist die gesetzliche Voraussetzung - nur, dass keine Aufsichtsbehörde diese Papiere einschätzen, geschweige denn bewerten kann - woher auch, hatten ja mit solchen Dingen nie zu tun!

Galerie Janknegt – Presentation

Galerie Janknegt was opened in September 2007 by Ronald and Edina Janknegt in the city of Hanau, Germany. The Gallery is multi-functional. Paintings on exhibition you will see in the
Presentation Room. The Tutoring and the Language School are placed in the Study.
Edina Janknegt’s Studio is in the largest room with lots of space for creativity, for painting and for
painting lessons.

The beautiful patio (Galerie-Garten) is the jewel of Galerie Janknegt. The green oasis is growing
and blooming in hundred-and-thirty pots. The combination of tropical and Hungarian flowers is
somewhat unusual, still stunningly beautiful. You will find here Passion Flowers, Angel’s Trumpets,
more than thirty Roses, about hundred-and-fifty Lilies, Cacti and various exotic flowers. This charming Garden is being watered by rain water. We made room for two bathing places for birds,
they are popular during the warm seasons. In the winter they find here food and shelter.

Our guests are always welcome to come to spend time outside enjoying the nature, the calmness
and drink a coffee or tea while reading a good book.

Our Event Calendar 2009 is varied. You will find the popular highlights like
‘Rose Festival’ or ‘The Evening of Love’, in addition we plan various exhibitions for international artists, weekend events and workshops.
Meeting the demand for artistic activities we offer different workshops. Everyone who loves nature
is going to enjoy these events.
The painting workshop ‘Four Seasons’ offers a great possibility to paint specific motives, landscapes,
plants and flowers according to the actual season.
‘Botanical Painting’ is on Saturdays in the studio of the Gallery. After a short guided tour through the Gallery Garden we will paint the chosen motives in detail.
You find hints in the Event Calendar 2009 about the times when certain flowers bursts into bloom. The garden is especially beautiful during these times. It is worth to visit us and have ‘Breakfast in the Garden’ or ‘Coffee and Cake’.
The project ‘House of Arts’ is a special project, we are going to have artworks in the whole house. Two exhibitions of Hungarian artists: Szilvásy and Janknegt on two floors.

De Koningin werd jarig en ze zei nou potverdrie
ik wil dit jaar geen feest met weer paté en Franse brie
ik wil ook wel is wat anders dan altijd dat chique spul
ik wil gewoon een vette bek en niet die flauwe kul
toen heeft ze in de keuken zelf de koekenpan gepakt
en draaide eigenhandig van die balletjes gehakt
ze zong er vrolijk bij
en die balletjes zijn van mij

De gasten arriveerden één voor één en stuk voor stuk

en toen kwam de Koningin naar binnen met een grote schaal
en riep ik warme balletjes genoeg voor allemaal
en de gasten gingen staan en zongen toen spontaan

Het feest was op zijn hoogtepunt toen klonk er plots een gil

en vroeg "mag ik er even langs, mag ik er even door"
ik ga weer naar de keuken toe er is niks aan de hand
en ga weer nieuwe ballen draaien voor het vaderland
en binnen drie kwartier had iedereen weer plezier

Ein Autofahrer wird von der Polizei angehalten. Der Polizist sagt: "Guten
Tag, ich habe sie gerade mit 170 km/h gemessen, obwohl nur 120 erlaubt
sind!".
Der Fahrer erwidert: "Herr Wachtmeister, dass kann gar nicht sein, ich
hatte den Tempomat die ganze Zeit auf 120 km/h eingestellt. Vielleicht muss
ihr Radargerät neu kalibriert werden!?"
Die Frau auf dem Beifahrersitz blickt von ihrer Zeitung auf und sagt:
"Schatz, wie soll das denn gehen? Unser Auto hat doch gar kein Tempomat..."
Der Polizist schreibt den Strafzettel weiter und der Mann blickt zu seiner
Frau und murmelt: "Kannst du nicht einmal deinen Mund halten?"
Sie blickt ihn nur vorwurfsvoll an und meint: "Du solltest dankbar sein,
dass dein Radarwarner dich wenigstens ein bisschen runtergebremst hat bevor
du gemessen wurdest!"
Der Polizist schreibt direkt den zweiten Strafzettel wegen Besitz eines
nicht erlaubten Radarwarngeräts, und der Mann blickt seine Frau ärgerlich
an und knurrt: "Verdammt, halt endlich deinen Mund!"
Als der Polizist dem Fahrer die beiden Strafzettel in die Hand drückt
bemerkt er noch: "Ach, und ich sehe gerade, dass sie auch nicht
angeschnallt sind. Das macht dann noch mal 40 Euro Bußgeld!"
Der Fahrer entschuldigt sich: "Herr Wachtmeister, ich habe mich nachdem sie
mich angehalten haben, abgeschnallt, um meinen Führerschein aus der

"Chuck und sein Gaul" oder: "Wie das amerikanische Finanz-System
funktioniert"
Der junge Chuck will mit einer eigenen Ranch reich werden. Als Anfang kauft
er einem Farmer ein Pferd ab. Er übergibt dem Farmer seine ganzen 100
Dollar und dieser verspricht, ihm das Pferd am nächsten Tag zu liefern.

Am nächsten Tag kommt der Farmer vorbei und teilt Chuck eine schlechte
Nachricht mit: "Es tut mir leid, Kleiner, aber das Tier ist in der Nacht
tot umgefallen." Meint Chuck: "Kein Problem. Gib mir einfach mein Geld
zurück. "Geht nicht", eröffnet ihm der Farmer. "Ich habe das Geld gestern
bereits für Dünger ausgegeben."

Chuck überlegt kurz. "Na dann", fängt er an, "nehme ich das tote Biest
trotzdem."
"Wozu denn?" fragt der Farmer.
"Ich will es verlosen", erklärt ihm Chuck. "Du kannst doch kein totes Pferd
verlosen!", staunt der Farmer. Doch Chuck antwortet: "Kein Problem! Ich
erzähl' einfach keinem, dass es schon tot ist..."

Monate später laufen sich Chuck - fein in Anzug und schicken Schuhen - und
der Farmer in der Stadt über den Weg. Fragt der Farmer: "Chuck! Wie lief's
denn mit der Verlosung des Pferde-Kadavers?"

"Spitze", erzählt ihm Chuck. "Ich habe über 500 Lose zu je 2 Dollar
